Fostering Independence
(Shishu)
Nursery Section | Age Groups - 3+ to 5+ (Nursery to Grade 1)
At Shreyas Foundation School, the Shishu section embraces the Montessori philosophy as a foundation for fostering independence, confidence, and joyful learning during the early years of childhood. The approach recognizes that every child is naturally curious and capable of learning when provided with the right environment, guidance, and freedom. Rather than imposing rigid instruction or uniform expectations, the Montessori method at Shishu encourages children to become active participants in their own learning journey, developing self-reliance and responsibility from an early age.
The learning environment is carefully prepared to meet the developmental needs of young children. Classrooms are thoughtfully organized with child-friendly spaces and specialized learning materials that are accessible, inviting, and designed to stimulate exploration. Every object in the environment has a purpose, encouraging children to interact independently with materials and activities that match their interests and abilities. This sense of ownership and accessibility helps children develop confidence and comfort within the learning space.
A key aspect of the Montessori philosophy at Shishu is freedom within structure. Children are encouraged to choose their own tasks and activities according to their curiosity and readiness. Instead of every child performing the same task at the same time, students work at their own pace, allowing learning to become a natural and enjoyable process rather than a forced routine. This individualized approach respects the uniqueness of each child and reduces unnecessary pressure or competition.
The specialized Montessori materials play a central role in this process. Designed to be tactile, self-correcting, and engaging, these materials help children learn through direct experience and repetition. Whether working with shapes, textures, counting objects, language tools, or practical life activities, children develop concentration, coordination, problem-solving abilities, and sensory awareness through hands-on interaction. Because the materials are self-corrective, children learn to identify and improve their mistakes independently, building confidence and critical thinking skills without constant intervention from adults.
Practical life activities are also deeply integrated into the Shishu experience. Children participate in simple everyday tasks such as arranging objects, pouring water, folding cloth, cleaning, organizing, gardening, and caring for their environment. These activities may appear simple, but they play a vital role in developing motor skills, focus, patience, responsibility, and independence. Through these experiences, children gain a sense of capability and self-worth while learning the value of discipline and care.
Teachers in the Shishu section serve as gentle guides rather than authoritative instructors. Their role is to observe, support, and introduce children to appropriate learning experiences while allowing them the freedom to explore independently. This respectful approach helps children develop intrinsic motivation and a genuine love for learning.
The Montessori method at Shreyas Foundation School ultimately aims to nurture children who are confident, independent, curious, and emotionally secure. By allowing children to choose, explore, and learn at their own pace within a thoughtfully prepared environment, the Shishu section creates a strong foundation for lifelong learning and personal growth. It is an educational experience where independence is not merely taught but naturally cultivated through everyday experiences and meaningful engagement.
