Ethical issues surrounding virtual relationships

Lately I’ve been thinking about how normal virtual relationships are becoming. A friend of mine recently told me he spends hours chatting with an AI girlfriend and he says it actually helps him feel less lonely after work. At first I laughed, but then I realized he was serious. He says he can customize the personality, the tone of conversations, even the emotional vibe. It made me wonder — where do we draw the line ethically? Is it harmless if it’s just text and algorithms, or could it slowly replace real connections? I’m not judging him at all, I’m just genuinely curious how others see this. Can virtual companionship be healthy, or does it risk creating unrealistic expectations about relationships?

I get why this feels complicated. I tried something similar out of curiosity a few months ago. Platforms like this let you shape the interaction however you want, and that can feel comforting because there’s no rejection or awkwardness. Some people even explore more playful sides of conversation, like a dirty ai chat, just to experiment in a safe digital space. For me, it wasn’t about replacing real people but more about understanding what kind of communication style I like. I think the ethical side really depends on intention. If someone uses it as a tool for self-reflection or temporary comfort, that’s one thing. But if it becomes the only form of intimacy, that might be worth questioning. Balance probably matters more than the technology itself.
